  • Three of the most expensive Rolex watches right now are:

Paul Newman’s Rolex Daytona 6239 “Paul Newman”

    $17.75 million

    Sold October 2017 – Phillips

This Rolex Daytona was given to Paul Newman by his wife Joanne Woodward when he was deep into car racing. The back of the watch is engraved with the note: “DRIVE CAREFULLY ME.” The dial of the watch was different from standard Daytona dials and Rolex named them “exotic dials.” However, today, they’re known as “Paul Newman” dials because of the association with the famous actor.

in 1984, Paul Newman gave the watch to his daughter’s then-boyfriend, James Cox, because the young man couldn’t tell the time since he didn’t have a watch on his wrist. James Cox kept the watch until last year when it was auctioned off to become the most expensive watch ever sold.

    Rolex Daytona 6265 “The Unicorn”

    $5.94 million

    Sold May 2018 – Phillips

This Rolex Daytona watch belonged to famous watch collector John Goldberger. It has been dubbed “The Unicorn” because it’s the only known example of a white gold vintage Daytona ref. 6265. All proceeds of the sales were donated to a children’s charity.

    3. Rolex 6062 “Bao Dai”

    $5.06 million

    Sold May 2017 – Phillips

This yellow gold Rolex ref. 6062 triple calendar moon phase with diamond indexes once belonged to Bao Dai, the last emperor of Vietnam. He purchased it in 1954 while he was in Switzerland attending the Geneva Convention. It’s the only known example of the Rolex 6062 with a black dial and diamond hour markers. It broke the record twice (2012, 2017) for the most expensive Rolex ever sold at auction (until it was surprised by the other two Rolex watches above).
